To me quality web design is driven by information architecture design principles. Graphic design should support these principles. Effective web design is about organizing and classifying content so that it can be easily found and read, listened to or viewed.

A Simple site map. The table of contents' numbering and labeling scheme serves as the basic for site-map page coding.

Shapes indicate page type. A box with rounded corners indicates one of the site's administrative pages.
In this example, a "floating" page accessible from multiple pages opened in multiple browser windows.

The workflow diagram illustrates pathways between pages.
The workflow diagram also serves as a communications tool that helps to write scenario for the engineers to work from when they code the site.
